First Day in Provence - 6th November 2016

After a pretty long journey from Rheims to Rasteau, which was pretty treacherous due the torrential rain almost all of the way, we finally arrived at the house in Rasteau after dark.

This morning, the rains subsided and we woke up to a beautiful bright day looking across fields of vineyards. After breakfast on the terrace, we travelled about 5km into Vaison-La-Romaine, which dates back to ancient times. There are Roman ruins, while on the hill stands a Medieval walled village overlooking the town.

We parked in the town square looking for lunch and were almost immediately accosted by a chef on the terrace of the Le Bar a Thym, who introduced us to his Sunday buffet menu of an apperitif of bucks-fizz, starters, main course and dessert plus free flow of wine from a wine box  - all for Euro18 each. The place was full of locals, so how could we refuse? The dishes wery pretty good, but the terrines were particularly yummy.

We then walked around the town, which is picturesque and certainly touristy, but most shops and restaurants were closed for Sunday. We then drove around to the foot of the medieval village and walked up. The final part of the ascent to the fort is chalky and craggy, where Magnus showed off his billy goat hill climbing skills.
