Nishiki Market

Handmade copper kitchen pots and pans

The Nishiki market is a covered pedestrian market encompassing one block of downtown Kyoto. Whilst the buildings are modern, there has been a market in the same area since the 1400s. Originally a wholesale market for traders, as Japan entered it’s ‘modern period’ at the end of the Edo period in 1868, it became a retail market for local shoppers.

Today, Nishiki Market is a showcase for locally produced premium Japanese delicacies and ingredients, but has also evolved into a big tourist attraction selling street food, souvenirs, and speciality stores for Japanese hardware, arts and crafts.

Those Snoopy head rice cakes look too good to eat!
