The Sacher Hotel - home of the sachertorte

Vienna Coffee Culture

Vienna is famous for its coffee and cake and a very civilised afternoon passtime is indulging in both. Cafes abound in Vienna and some are old established. Perhaps the most famous is the Cafe Sacher, in the Sacher Hotel, famous for the Sachertorte, a rich chocolate sponge cake with chocolate icing and a thin layer of apricot jam served with whipped cream. Next up is the apfelstrudel with vanilla sauce.

As to coffee, there is no one version of Viennese coffee, so it is best to study the options before ordering to stay in the waiter's good books. Five available options are Schwarzer (or Mocca) - black, Wiener Melange - milky with foam, Einspanner - espresso with whipped cream, Maria Theresa - black with orange liqueur and whipped cream, and Turkische - very, very black. Tea is also available.
