Vaison-La-Romain Market and Gordes - 15th November 2016

Art, but not as we know it.

This morning we went shopping at the local market primarly to buy red mullet. We bought some small ones last week, which once fried with in a little flour, were delicious. Today, hoping for some the same, they were much larger (probably had a chance to grow since last week). Pauline again fried them up a treat.

In the afternoon, we travelled to Gordes, which is 50km away from home, but unlike the other villages we have visited, which have been on the hills quickly accessible from the roads in the valley, once we were past Carpentras, we drove up into a hilly region and along some very twisty narrow roads. With me driving a wide right hand drive car and Pauline in what would be the driver's seat, if we were in a French car, she had more than a few heart in the mouth moments as approaching cars whizzed by at speed and very close.

As we approached Gordes, we passed some impressive dry stone walls and buildings. i.e. with no binding cement, but only the weight of the close fitting stones to keep them together.

Gordes is reputedly one of the most beatiful villages in France. Well, I am not sure about that, but it certainly has one of the most beautiful views across valley towards Avignon and Carpentras and all the way to Mont Ventou. It was, however, a little misty for a decent photo. Gordes also has some pretty expensive real estate with Sotheby's Estate Agents having a branch in the village square.
