Chateau-Thierry

School

This is one of the nicer towns called Chateau-Thierry situated on the banks of the Marne River, 90km east of Paris. A hill dominates the town, upon which used to be the site the Chateau surrounded by defensive walls. Today only the walls and some smaller structures remain. On the same side as the castle, at ground level, lies the old and administrative part of town. On the other side, the town is a little more modern and become more modern still as the town spralls out.

The town city is typical of other with the tall Marie (town hall) in the town square with exaggerated tall roofs. Mimicing churches, the Marie is talling projecting power over the land. This particular Marie was built late in the 19th century because the previous one was found to be too small

The town was the site of two battles, one during the Napoleonic wars, where French met Prussian and Imperial Russian forces in 1814, and in another in 1918, where the allies including French and US forces defeated the Germans, for whch the town was awarded the 'Legion de Honneur'.
