Umbertide - 10th May 2017

Every Wednesday morning, there is a market in the town of Umbertide, where we buy our groceries, honey and cheese. The 'wet market' (food stalls) can be found in the old town, while the 'dry market', hard goods are outside in the newer areas.

Another town with roots in ancient times, when it was called Pitulum Mergens, it is now one of the larger towns in Umbria. It differs from many of the other towns in Umbria in being built on flat land. It seems that the town's fortunes took a downturn after the fall of Rome up, when it was destroyed in the 6th century. It was re-established in its present area from the 8th century with the name of Fratta. There was a name change in 1863 to Umbertide in honour of the then crown prince, Umberto after the unification within the Kingdom of Italy in 1855..

Some Roman ruins can be found and a greater part of the medieval walls remain including some of the towers. The land in front of the old city walls has been excavated and landscaped to show the city walls to maximum effect, while showing some of the ancient ruins.
