Roussillon - 1st March 2017

Roussillon is a village in the Luberon region, part of Vaucluse in Provence. We have not visited Luberon until now and it was something that we were keen to tick off our bucket list before leaving Vaucluse. The weather has been very changeable, but we were blessed with a warm, sunny day

Roussillon is a pretty village perched on a hill with 360 degree views across Luberon Natural Regional Park. The village is famous for its ochre deposits, mined to be used for paint pigments ranging in colours from yellow to orange to red. These pigments have been used to decorate the village buildings giving each of them a unique look. As such, the village has been the subject of many paintings.

Samuel Beckett, the Irish writer, playwright, and poet, who was living in Paris at the outbreak of the second world war, joined the French Resistance. In 1942, pursued by the Gestapo, he fled with his partner, Suzanne, to Roussillon, where he continued to assist the Resistance by hiding arms in his home. He mentions Roussillon in his play, 'Waiting for Godot'.
