Avignon - Les Halles

Being a gloomy day, we decided to see the film Logan at the Pandora Cinema in Avignon. We set off earlier than usual because we wanted to visit Les Halles, which is the large covered market in the heart of Avignon housing 40 stalls. This opens at 6am until 1:30pm, Tuesday to Sunday. It is a very odd building, being green and covered in creeping plants. Bearing in mind that it surrounded by period sandstone buildings, it is a rather refreshing change from the sameness of the rest of the city.

Provence is blessed with many markets, sellling fresh produce, that take place every day in at least one town or village . So apart from the convenience of being open 6 days a week and covered, the market has to offer something special to make it 'a go to' destination in competition with the local open markets and hypermarkets that bless this province. In this it succeeds up to a point as the food is beautifully presented and everything that you might want is all available under one roof. Tempting as it was, we did not buy much, as we were moving this week-end.

We were looking forward to seeing Logan as we had generally enjoyed the Wolverine movies. While they tend to be violent, there is usually some humour to lighten the mood. As the source material is comic, a lot of violence can be excused as not being real. However, as the last of the franchise, we were warned that it would be a little darker than previous editions and indeed it was a 'R' rated slasher (literally) movie, where a young teenager outslashes Wolverine. There used to be an unwritten rule that children are not seen obviously meating out violence on screen and this film pushes out the boundaries. I know that this film has a lot of appeal and it is an interesting road movie with 'themes', but I do not think that I would want to see it again.
